Acromioplasty

Acromioplasty

What Is Arthroscopic Acromioplasty?

Arthroscopic acromioplasty is a minimally invasive shoulder surgery performed to treat shoulder impingement syndrome. In this condition, the tendons of the rotator cuff are pinched under the acromion (the bony part of the shoulder blade). The procedure involves reshaping or removing a small portion of the acromion to create more space for the tendons, reducing friction and irritation.

When Is It Needed?

Your doctor may recommend arthroscopic acromioplasty if:

  • You have persistent shoulder pain due to impingement that does not improve with rest, physiotherapy, or injections.
  • Pain interferes with daily activities such as reaching overhead, lifting, or dressing.
  • Imaging shows narrowing of the subacromial space or tendon irritation.
  • You want to preserve shoulder function and avoid more extensive surgery.
The Procedure Step-by-Step
  1. Evaluation – MRI or ultrasound confirms impingement and tendon irritation.
  2. Anesthesia –General or regional anesthesia is given.
  3. Arthroscopy – A small camera is inserted into the shoulder joint.
  4. Acromioplasty– The surgeon removes inflamed tissue (bursa) and shaves or reshapes a small portion of the acromion bone to widen the space.
  5. Closure – Small incisions are closed, and the shoulder is bandaged.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
  • Hospital stay:Usually same-day or overnight.
  • Immobilization:A sling may be used briefly for comfort.
  • Physiotherapy: Begins soon after surgery to restore movement and strength.
  • Return to activities: Daily activities resume in 4–6 weeks; sports or heavy work may take 2–3 months.
Benefits
  • Minimally invasive with smaller incisions.
  • Relieves pain from shoulder impingement.
  • Improves mobility and function.
  • Faster recovery compared to open surgery.
Risks & Considerations
  • Infection, stiffness, or incomplete pain relief (rare).
  • Recovery requires commitment to physiotherapy.
  • Not suitable if there is severe rotator cuff damage or advanced arthritis.
Key Message for Patients

Arthroscopic acromioplasty is a safe and effective minimally invasive surgery for shoulder impingement. By reshaping the acromion bone and removing inflamed tissue, the procedure relieves pain, restores mobility, and helps patients return to daily activities. With proper rehabilitation, most patients achieve excellent long-term outcomes.
