Hip Resurfacing

Hip Resurfacing

What Is Hip Resurfacing?

Hip resurfacing is a type of joint replacement surgery where the damaged surfaces of the hip joint are reshaped and capped with a smooth metal covering instead of replacing the entire ball and socket. It is considered a bone-preserving alternative to total hip replacement, especially for younger and more active patients.

Who Is It For?

Hip resurfacing may be recommended if:

  • You have hip arthritis or damage limited to the joint surfaces.
  • You are younger, active, and have good bone quality.
  • You want to preserve more of your natural bone for possible future surgeries.
  • You experience persistent hip pain and stiffness that limit daily activities.
The Procedure Step-by-Step
  1. Evaluation – X-rays and scans confirm the extent of hip damage.
  2. Anesthesia –General or spinal anesthesia is given.
  3. Resurfacing – The damaged ball (femoral head) is reshaped and capped with a metal covering. The socket (acetabulum) is also fitted with a metal cup.
  4. Closure – The incision is closed, and recovery begins.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
  • Hospital stay:Usually 3–5 days.
  • Walking:Patients often begin walking with support within 1–2 days.
  • Physiotherapy:Essential to regain strength and mobility.
  • Return to activities: Most patients resume normal activities in 6–12 weeks.
  • Longevity: Hip resurfacing implants can last 10–15 years or more, depending on activity level.
Benefits
  • Preserves more natural bone compared to total hip replacement.
  • Allows higher activity levels after recovery.
  • Lower risk of dislocation due to larger ball size.
  • Easier to revise to a total hip replacement in the future if needed.
Risks & Considerations
  • Risk of metal ion release from the implant (rare, but monitored).
  • Not suitable for patients with weak bones, osteoporosis, or older age.
  • Possible complications: infection, fracture, or implant loosening.
Key Message for Patients

Hip resurfacing is a safe and effective alternative to total hip replacement for younger, active patients. It preserves more bone, allows greater activity after recovery, and can be revised more easily if needed in the future. With proper rehabilitation, most patients enjoy excellent pain relief and improved mobility.
