Plating (Long/Small bone)

Plating (Long/Small bone)

What Is Bone Plating?

Bone plating is a surgical procedure used to treat fractures (broken bones). In this technique, a specially designed metal plate is attached to the bone using screws to hold the broken pieces together. This stabilizes the fracture, allows proper healing, and restores normal alignment and function.

When Is It Needed?

Your doctor may recommend bone plating if:

  • You have a complex fracture that cannot heal properly with a cast or splint.
  • The bone is broken into multiple pieces (comminuted fracture).
  • The fracture involves a joint or weight-bearing bone.
  • Non-surgical treatments are not sufficient for stability.
  • You want faster recovery and early mobilization.
The Procedure Step-by-Step
  1. Evaluation – X-rays or CT scans confirm the fracture pattern.
  2. Anesthesia–General or regional anesthesia is given.
  3. Exposure – A surgical incision is made to access the broken bone.
  4. Reduction – The bone fragments are aligned in their correct position.
  5. Plating – A metal plate is fixed to the bone with screws to hold it securely.
  6. Closure – The incision is closed, and the limb is bandaged.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
  • Hospital stay:Usually 1–3 days depending on fracture severity.
  • Immobilization:A splint or cast may be used temporarily.
  • Physiotherapy: Begins gradually to restore movement and strength.
  • Return to activities: Daily activities resume in 6–12 weeks; sports or heavy work may take longer.
Benefits
  • Provides strong and stable fixation.
  • Allows early movement of the limb.
  • Restores normal bone alignment.
  • Reduces risk of improper healing (malunion).
Risks & Considerations
  • Infection at the surgical site.
  • Irritation from the plate or screws.
  • Rare risk of non-union (bone not healing).
  • Sometimes plates may need removal after healing.
Key Message for Patients

Bone plating is a safe and effective surgery for complex fractures. By stabilizing the broken bone with a plate and screws, the procedure ensures proper healing, restores alignment, and allows patients to return to daily activities more quickly. With proper rehabilitation, most patients achieve excellent long-term outcomes.
