Tripple Arthrodesis

Tripple Arthrodesis

What Is Triple Arthrodesis?

Triple arthrodesis is a surgical procedure where three joints in the hindfoot are permanently fused together:

  • The subtalar joint (between talus and calcaneus)
  • The talonavicular joint (between talus and navicular)
  • The calcaneocuboid joint (between calcaneus and cuboid)

By fusing these joints, the procedure eliminates painful motion, stabilizes the foot, and corrects deformities. It is typically performed when the hindfoot is severely damaged or arthritic.

When Is It Needed?

Your doctor may recommend triple arthrodesis if you have:

  • Severe arthritis in the hindfoot joints.
  • Chronic pain that does not improve with medications, injections, or physiotherapy.
  • Flatfoot deformity or severe foot instability.
  • Neuromuscular conditions (such as cerebral palsy or polio) causing deformity.
  • Failed previous foot surgeries.
The Procedure Step-by-Step
  1. Evaluation – X-rays or CT scans confirm the extent of damage.
  2. Anesthesia –General or regional anesthesia is given.
  3. Fusion – Damaged cartilage is removed, and the three joints are fused using screws or plates.
  4. Healing – Over time, the bones grow together into one solid unit.
  5. Closure – The incision is closed, and recovery begins.
Recovery and Rehabilitation
  • Hospital stay:Usually 2–3 days.
  • Immobilization:A cast or boot is worn for 8–12 weeks.
  • Weight-bearing: Often restricted until fusion is confirmed on X-rays.
  • Physiotherapy: Focuses on strengthening and gait training.
  • Return to activities: Daily activities resume in 3–6 months; full recovery may take up to 9–12 months.
Benefits
  • Provides significant pain relief.
  • Corrects deformity and improves foot alignment.
  • Restores strength and stability to the hindfoot.
  • Long-lasting results.
Risks & Considerations
  • Loss of motion in the fused joints.
  • Possible complications: infection, non-union (bones not fusing), or hardware irritation.
  • Increased stress on nearby joints over time.
  • Recovery requires patience and strict adherence to rehabilitation.
Key Message for Patients

Triple arthrodesis is a safe and effective surgery for patients with severe hindfoot arthritis, deformity, or instability. By permanently fusing three joints, the procedure eliminates pain, restores stability, and corrects alignment, though it sacrifices some foot motion. With proper rehabilitation, most patients adapt well and enjoy long-term relief.
